The Beatles are Coming to a Console Near You!

Number 9, number 9, number 9…

The Beatles: Rock Band Cover Art

That’s the number for the summer. On 9/9/09, Harmonix and MTV Games (makers of Rock Band) are bringing the latest incarnation of their

franchise to the XBox 360, Play Station 3, and Nintendo Wii consoles. It will feature the greatest band of the 20th century, The Beatles!

The Beatles: Rock Band will incorporate most of the same features of Rock Band 2 with some pretty nifty upgrades. The most anticipated of which is the incorporation of 3-part harmonies. Now, you and you buddies can attempt to replicate The Beatles melodic tones whilst in your drunken stupor. Thi s addition will allow up to 6 people to play the game simultaneously, or for added difficulty, you can sing and play the plastic instruments at the same time.

Other minor improvements include automatic selection of no-fail mode when the “Easy” difficulty is selected. This is an obvious play at, and a no-brainer for, the over 40 crowd that loved their music so much back when it was originally released. The no-fail setting has also been moved from the main menu Options section to be a part of the song selection options for ease of use for more experienced players.

Harmonix also took a page out of Guitar Hero’s book and added the 3…2…1… countdown to start a song back up after you have paused during the song. That was a nifty idea and brings the score for great ideas by the developers of the top band games to Red Octane 1, Harmonix 5,167,034.

The world was able to see the first images of The Beatles: Rock Band at E3, a conference of enormous proportions for the video game industry, and what we saw was nothing less than breath-taking. The game allows you to follow the band through their career at such pains-takingly recreated venues as The Cavern Club, the set of the Ed Sullivan Show, Shea Stadium, Budokan, Studio #2 at Abbey Road Studios, and the Rooftop of Apple Studios.

The 45-song setlist includes such Beatles classics as I Saw Her Standing There, I Want to Hold Your Hand, I Feel Fine, Day Tripper, Taxman, I Am the Walrus, Back in the U.S.S.R., Octopus’s Garden, and two of my personal favorites in Here Comes the Sun and Get Back.
